Lifelong Learning: American Indian Culture Through Music

September 19, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Must be logged in to register.

The Lifelong Learning Series is a collection of learning opportunities for residents of all ages. Each season, a different educational topic is presented to reignite a love of learning.

Music has always been at the very heart of Native cultures. This interactive presentation begins with the instructor performing his tribe's (Ponca Nation of Oklahoma) Flag Honoring Song. Various Plains-style social songs are rendered with song meanings, formats, and musical structures being conveyed. Participants are then given the opportunity to handle various traditional instruments such as drums, flutes, whistles and rattles while listening to historic stories about how the items were made and the meanings behind them. Questions are taken and the program is concluded with a heartfelt Southern Plains Quitting Song.

Extend your learning with a field trip to the Heard Museum on Sept. 20.

Residents are invited to log in and register for events.
