Speaker Series: From Big Idea to Big Screen

December 11, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Must be logged in to RSVP.

Long before we see a film on the big screen someone has an idea, develops the story and writes a script. With good luck and reputation, someone buys the rights to produce the film. Join prominent screenwriters Greg and Sara Bernstein and  film producer Fred Green, residents of DC Ranch, as they give a behind the scenes look of the movie making process. Doors open at 6 p.m., program begins at 6:30 p.m. Appetizers, wine and beer provided.

About the speaker: Fred Green
Frederick W. Green was born in Seattle, Washington. He graduated from Princeton University in 1969 with a degree in economics. Shortly thereafter, he began a 38-year career on Wall Street.

Green's interest in filmmaking dates back to 2003, when he executive produced a documentary on gun control titled Guns & Mothers. This critically acclaimed work was showcased on the PBS series Independent Lens and shown on more than 300 PBS affiliates.

Green is a member of the Producers Guild of America and a co-founder of Animal Kingdom Films, a production company based in New York City. Animal Kingdom produced Short Term 12, It Follows, Louder Than Bombs, Kicks, and Tramps.

About the speakers: Greg and Sara Bernstein

Sara and Gregory Bernstein met and began writing as a team while attending the American Film Institute. Sara came to AFI with a degree in English and a love for literature; Gregory had been an entertainment lawyer and studio executive at Columbia and Tri-Star Pictures.

Most recently, the Bernsteins co-wrote Official Secrets, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and which was then released in theaters nationally in August 2019. The film stars Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Matt Smith, Matthew Goode and Rhys Ifans.

The Bernsteins moved to Scottsdale in 2012, which is when Gregory began serving as a film professor at Arizona State University, something he has loved and continues to do.

Residents are invited to log in and register for events.
